Leaders Set the Bar

How do we as leaders create an atmosphere of teamwork and growth? How do we get our crew members to show up on time and do their best? What does it take to motivate a team to reach company goals and have fun doing it?

It takes a leader who shows up, sets a great example - she knows her job and what the company stands for, she is on time (early), respectful of others- be they employees, customers or vendors. It takes a leader who sets standards and expectations. Great employees want to know what is expected of them. They want to have clear guidelines and rules. They also want to know that those rules are expected to be followed by everyone. If someone isn't behaving as expected, that person is talked to, the rules are reinforced. Firm, frank and fair- that is what makes employees respect their supervisors.

A great leader doesn't allow his employees to walk all over him. He should not be doing his employee's work. I am not saying a great leader doesn't step in and help when needed, that is a must. He should guide his employees to do their jobs well, watch, encourage, correct, redirect. When leaders do too much, employees lose respect. Allow your employees to shine on their own.

Get to know your team members. Remember their birthdays and/or work anniversary. It is surprising what a boost that does for morale! Take the time to help team members get to know each other. This builds trust and loyalty. Trust and loyalty build great teams. Great teams reach goals!
