New Year, New Goals, New Beginnings

Why do we wait for January 1 to start something new? I guess because it’s a good time to start – but we “start new” every day! I recently saw a Charlie brown comic where Charlie Brown said, “You only live once” and Snoopy’s reply was, “Wrong! We only die once; we live every day!”

Often, we make the mistake of setting an annual goal, then beating ourselves up each day we didn’t take action to reach it. That leads to negative feelings about that goal and ourselves. We then allow ourselves to let go of the goal, because thinking about it just makes us depressed.

We need to re-think this whole “annual goal” thing. Yes, we need goals. (I know I need them to help me feel motivated each day.) BUT we need to set those goals, then break them down monthly to smaller “goal posts”. When we hit each mile marker, we celebrate the win. Always celebrate the win.

When we miss taking action, we must FORGIVE ourselves and know that tomorrow is another chance to shine! If we allowed ourselves to give in and give up every time we stumbled, we would never get to the finish line. We are human, and humans make mistakes.

So yes, set those goals for the coming year – then break them down into smaller steps towards reaching those. Make an effort to take action daily. One action each day creates amazing results! Celebrate the wins, forgive the missteps and stay positive and focused on the end goal.

Let’s enjoy the process of living, growing and reaching for the stars!

Here's to your success!
